konverjdans to choreograph for Dance at Socrates!

Norte Maar's Dance at Socrates 2017

Norte Maar's Dance at Socrates 2017

We're excited to announce that we will be choreographing a new piece (and performing it with live music) for Norte Maar's annual Dance at Socrates at Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens, NY. As resident choreographers this year, we'll be spending five days, August 7th through 11th, on a beautiful outdoor stage next to the water at this historic park creating work that we will perform on Saturday, August 12th, with guest dancers Landes Dixon and Philippines-based PJ Rebullida. The new work will be created to another score composed by our own brilliant Max Kanowitz and partly performed live by flautist Coreisa Lee

It is with great pleasure and giddiness and gratitude that we announce: we've just had our choreographic debut onstage at The Actors Fund Arts Center! On April 7th, 8th and 9th, we premiered our newest ballet, 'STRATA', choreographed and performed by the three of us in collaboration with composer and percussionist Max Kanowitz and visual artist Nancy Baker, at three sold-out performances of CounterPointe5 -- Norte Maar's fifth annual showcase that presents new work by women choreographers in collaboration with women visual artists.

We're so honored to have been part of CounterPointe5, and we have to thank Jason Andrew and Julia Gleich, co-founders of Norte Maar and dance and visual art curators of CounterPointe, for their generosity, encouragement and support, and for wanting to give us more and more opportunities to create and collaborate.

We have to also thank our generous Patrons on Patreon, without whom we could not have spent all that time in the studio, experimenting, creating, erasing, editing, failing, finding, discovering, playing, committing, learning, growing.

SO, THANK YOU, dear Patrons, collaborators, friends, supporters, and mentors - for helping us turn our "insane dreams into reality". When we started this company in the summer of 2016, we could never have imagined all of this taking place only nine months later!

Love! And more love!

konverjdans: 'only once' at john doe ny

Here are some excerpts from 'Only Once' - the 45 minutes of improvisation we did, along with percussionist Max Kanowitz, in response to the visual arts exhibition 'Nothing Twice', curated by Etty Yaniv, that ran from March 10, 2017 - March 26, 2017 at John Doe NY. We performed 'Only Once' on March 11th, during the exhibition's opening weekend - our first time ever performing improvisation for such an extended length of time - and for a whole crowd of people! We were met with enthusiasm, and we can't wait to do more performances like this - and tell more stories through spontaneous music and movement. There is something magical and exhilarating about walking into a space knowing nothing of what's to come. . . . Thank you for receiving us so well, both you dance and visual arts enthusiasts, at John Doe NY!

konverjdans: spring 2017 performances

konverjdans 2017 - Jordan Miller, Amy Saunder, Tiffany Mangulabnan

We are thrilled to announce four of our upcoming performances in New York City this spring!

konverjdans has been invited to perform on the opening weekend of Nothing Twice, a visual arts exhibition at the John Doe gallery in Brooklyn that will feature seven female painters and sculptors "preoccupied with ephemeral materials" and a "relentless sense of transience" - the perfect setting, we think, for the most ephemeral of art forms: DANCE. So we're teaming with our resident musical genius, percussionist/composer Max Kanowitz to exploit the capricious nature of unplanned movement, sound and space, and performing 'Only Once', an evening of completely improvised music and dance, on March 11, 2017.

We're also choreographing a new piece in collaboration with visual artist Nancy Baker, whose wonderful and dynamic work is directly inspiring and driving our choreographic process. The piece, set to new music by Kanowitz, will be performed on April 7, 8 and 9 at CounterPointe5 - Norte Maar's annual showcase of "new work by women choreographers working with the pointe shoe" in collaboration with female visual artists.

konverjdans at lovecraft nyc: a night of improvisation

Tiffany Mangulabnan, Amy Saunder, Jordan Miller

Last night, we joined forces with our brilliant friend and collaborator, percussionist Max Kanowitz for konverjdans's second performance on a sunken stage at Lovecraft Bar in New York City's East Village. This time, we improvised music, movement, space and sound completely, from beginning to end. What a thrill to go into a performance with absolutely no idea of what is to come of it!

We had a blast, and we hope you can join us for the next one. 'Til then!

looking back on 2016 with konverjdans

Happy New Year from all of us at konverjdans!

We're starting our year off with rehearsals for an upcoming performance in NYC, where we'll be joined by Max Kanowitz (percussionist, artist, and friend), in a rather experimental cross-disciplinary improvisation that plays with the ways that sound influences movement and movement influences sound.

We'll be sure to keep you in the loop as our various collaborations and projects progress. But for now, we hope you enjoy this little video we put together of some of our favorite moments from 2016 - and hope that you, too, had a memorable year.

Here's to 2017 and its endless possibilities!

support konverjdans on patreon

We would like to share this little promotional video with you (below), and invite you to visit our Patreon pagePatreon is a wonderful platform that connects artists with their patrons - whether friends, family, fellow artists or friendly supporters - and allows a "patron" to pledge a monthly donation of his or her choice to help an artist in need (in exchange for signed goodies, exclusive invitations and other fun things)

We are asking for your support - whether your support means just sharing our Patreon page on Facebook, forwarding the message to other people, or helping us increase our patron number by becoming a "Firefly" patron (a beam of light!) for a mere $1/month. After all, every little bit will help us grow.

We passionately want to createcollaborate, and share our work with you and other people (and to always fairly compensate any artists who work with us). Art needs support - it always has! And now especially, when we are just at the beginning of everything, bursting at the seams with inspiration, ideas, and the anticipation of potential collaborations, we hope you will join us and support usin any way that you can, as we embark on our creative journey.

In the new year, we will also be a part of Fractured Atlas, an non-profit arts organization through which we will finally be able to receive tax-deductible donations - which will help us along as we hire more collaborators, dancers, musicians, participate in choreographic residencies away from the city, and produce studio showings and performances in 2017... so watch out for that, too!

In the mean time, enjoy the video. We thank you for your interest, enthusiasm, and support!

konverjdans: a studio showing at gibney dance center

We are thrilled to announce that we've just had our very first (and successful!) filming and showing of our work in New York City. (Shoutout and special thanks to Mr. Jonathan Russo for pushing us to open this filming to our friends.)

It was held on Thursday, November 17th, at Gibney Dance Center in Downtown Manhattan. We showed 'convergence/divergence', a duet for two women that features Amy Saunder and Tiffany Mangulabnan accompanied by upright bassist Peter Maness; and 'If I Were a Woman', a trio that highlights the strength and vulnerability of Jordan Miller and which is one of the first fragments of a larger ballet we're in the process of building to the original music of Megg Farrell.

All of this was filmed by our friend and collaborator, Sergio CarrascoWe can't wait to share these videos with you! But for now, check out our Instagram to see photos from the showing. And i
f you didn't make it to this one, we hope you'll join us for the next one!

Thank you so much for your support and enthusiasm, those of you who joined us on Thursday, and those of you who were there with us in spirit. We truly appreciate you.

konverjdans bizarre bushwick performance

konverjdans had such a blast performing with Megg Farrell and her band at Bizarre Bushwick last Thursday, October 6.

We showed a bit of what we've choreographed for her song 'The River' (which we will be shooting a big music video for in the spring of 2017) and improvised to other songs of hers that we love, including 'If I Were a Woman'.

The night was a great success! These pictures were taken by Sergio Carrasco.

konverjdans in megg farrell's 'sombrero'

Today, we shot a music video for 'Sombrero', an original song by the lovely jazz singer, songstress and songwriter Megg Farrell, a musical collaborator and an artist we greatly admire.

Megg is well-known in the New York City jazz scene for her powerful and unique French-jazz style of singing, and less known for her original music. Hopefully we can help change that. On Thursday, October 6th, at Bizarre Bushwick, we'll be performing at her first official album's release party. Come and join us!

Meanwhile, enjoy these video-stills from today's shoot.

tonight at lovecraft nyc

Tonight at Lovecraft! We're performing as part of a music and art networking event that's also serving to help NYC homelessness.

Some shots from rehearsal:

And some blurbs from the artists:

Come and see this past week's investigations come to life in our first original piece - a collaborative effort between the visionary, Tiffany Mangulabnan, the mover, Amy Saunder, and the music, Peter Maness. I'm so lucky to be working with these beautiful people.

- Jordan

Here's a serene moment from the otherwise tense and tangled tug-of-war I'm in the middle of with Amy Saunder - with ideas faintly inspired by an old Susan Sontag quote (and a bowed double bass). Jordan Miller is our helpful, loving eye, and Peter Maness is playing his, well, double bass for us when we show this madness on Saturday, 7pm, at @lovecraftnyc for a music and art networking event that's also helping end NYC homelessness. Come on out - it'll be a party! 👯🎻 @konverjdans
